Precise film positioning for laminated safety glass

In the production of laminated safety glass, two or more glass panes are permanently bonded together under heat and pressure using a tear-resistant, viscoelastic plastic film. Precise positioning of the film is crucial for optical quality and laminate quality. Film overhang or underhang, film residues and foreign objects can impair quality and complicate subsequent production steps.

Continuous inline inspection for greater process reliability
The high-resolution 4K laser scanner scanCONTROL 8500-100 monitors the film overhang directly during the ongoing production process and continuously checks whether it remains within the defined limits. At the same time, the sensor detects possible film residues on the glass pane. This allows deviations to be reliably detected during production and defective components to be identified at an early stage.

Reliable inspection directly at the glass edge
For the measurement, the sensor is positioned above the glass edge as it passes laterally. The measurement is targeted specifically at the film. Due to the birefringence of the glass, the film can be clearly detected, allowing both the end of the glass and the film overhang to be determined reliably. If a defined limit is violated, the SMART sensor can stop the downstream process via the PLC. In this way, non-contact inline inspection increases process and quality reliability while helping to reduce scrap caused by incorrect film positioning.
